Exam Pattern and Paper Details
The examination is a Written Examination comprising two descriptive papers, with the standard set at a Degree level. The maximum total marks for the examination are 200, with each paper carrying 100 marks. The minimum qualifying mark for all communities in the written examination is 60 (out of 200). Candidates must appear for both Paper I and Paper II; failure to attend either paper will result in non-consideration for selection.
Paper I: General Tamil (Code: 389)

Paper I is on General Tamil and is set at a Degree Standard, carrying 100 marks.

The duration for this paper is 3 hours.

The content focuses on General Tamil and includes sections on ஆட்சித்தமிà®´் Aatchithamil (Administrative Tamil).

Questions will specifically require candidates to write the Tamil technical terms that are equivalent to English words provided from the Aatchithamil lexicon.
Paper II: General English (Code: 390)

Paper II is on General English and is also set at a Degree Standard, carrying 100 marks.

The duration for this paper is 3 hours.

The paper is descriptive and covers a wide range of topics, including Essay Writing (about 300 words), Letter Writing (e.g., for demands, inquiries, orders), Precis Writing (briefing an unseen passage of 200 words into about 70 words), and Reading Comprehension.

It also includes Translation tasks (both Tamil to English and English to Tamil), Hints Development (expanding given hints into a passage), Notification drafting, and various Grammar items (e.g., voice, speech, sentence transformation).
